What makes a brand an icon?

How does a brand gain iconic status? Is it something that you can create yourself or is it something that can only be bestowed on you by others.

These questions crossed my mind when when I stopped at Webers on the way up north last weekend. For those not familiar with Webers, they have been serving burgers and fries on the side of Highway 11 since 1963. As it was the Friday of the Thanksgiving weekend, by early afternoon it was already busy with people heading up to their cottages. It was a scene from a ritual that has been going on for almost 50 years.

Social Media is a visual medium

If a picture is truly worth a thousand words then why try to say it in 140 characters or less when you can show it in an image. People now carry around smartphones that capture higher quality images than digital cameras did a decade ago with the result that all those devices are busy taking pictures like never before. Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, Flickr, Klip and even Facebook are providing a place for people to post, share and look at images in unprecedented numbers.

It all starts with a Muse

I have recently been thinking quite a lot about the nature of creativity and inspiration – where does it come from and how does someone feed and nurture it? So I surprised myself the other week when I came to the recognition that I have had a creative muse who has influenced me for the past 30 years.
